Environmental hazards, social inequality, and fetal loss: implications of live-birth bias for estimation of disparities in birth outcomes

چکیده
Background: Restricting to live births can induce bias in studies of pregnancy and developmental outcomes, but whether this live-birth results underestimating disparities is unknown. Bias may arise from collider stratification due an unmeasured common cause fetal loss the outcome interest, or depletion susceptibles, where exposure differentially causes among those with underlying susceptibility. Methods: We conducted a simulation study examine magnitude population parameterized resemble one year conceptions California (N=625,000). simulated non-time-varying environmental hazard, risk spontaneous abortion, time birth using 1,000 Monte Carlo simulations. Our interest was preterm birth. included social vulnerability factor represent disadvantage, estimated overall differences for linear probability models stratified by factor. calculated how often confidence intervals true point estimate (CI coverage probabilities) illustrate effect estimates differed qualitatively truth. Results: Depletion susceptibles resulted larger compared stratification, socially vulnerable group. Coverage probabilities were not adversely affected stratification. reduced coverage, especially (coverage = 46%, non-socially 91% most extreme scenario). Conclusions: In simulations, hazardous exposures induced women. Keywords: bias; simulation; health disparities; justice;

Comparison between Water Birth and Land Birth in terms of Fetal and Neonatal Outcomes
Introduction: Although warm water is used for labor pain reduction, there is controversy regarding the potential complications of water birth. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate fetal and neonatal complications of water birth versus those observed in conventional modes of delivery. Methods:This clinical randomized trial was performed on 200 pregnant women at Mashhad Omolbanin Hosp...

Social Inequality in Birth Outcomes in Korea, 1995-2008
Social inequality in adverse birth outcomes has been demonstrated in several countries. The present study examined the separate and joint effects of parental education and work in order to investigate the causal pathways of social class effects on adverse birth outcomes in Korea. The occurrence of low birth weight, preterm births, and intrauterine growth retardation was examined among 7,766,065...
متن کاملEstimation of Fetal Weight by Clinical Methods and Ultrasonography and Comparing With Actual Birth Weight
Introduction: Assessment of fetal weight is a vital factor in antenatal care, not only in the management of labor and delivery but also in identifying fetal weight disorders. Objective: This study compares the accuracy of clinical methods and ultrasonography in Estimating Fetal Weight (EFW) with Actual Birth Weight (ABW) in term pregnant women. Materials and Methods: This diagnostic test eval...
متن کاملThe Role of Environmental Hazards in Premature Birth
Progress in uncovering the protein interaction networks of several species has led to questions of what underlying principles might govern their organization. Few studies have tried to determine the impact of protein interaction network evolution on the observed physiological differences between species. Using comparative genomics and structural information, we show here that eukaryotic species...
